THE 2013 STARS AND STRIPES COMMITTEE OF CLIFTON FORGE MAIN STREET ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR A FLAG DAY CEREMONY The Stars and Stripes Celebration Committee of Clifton Forge Main Street, Inc. has completed plans for this year's Flag Day Ceremony on Friday June 14th. Held at the national award winning Masonic Amphitheatre, located on Church Street in Clifton Forge, the ceremony begins at 5:00 PM and will include an introduction by Dr. Jack Backels regarding the important part the Alleghany Highlands played in the build up to our country's war for independence from Great Britain. Clifton Forge Boy Scout Troop #2, led by Scoutmaster Kevin Persinger, will offer a presentation and explanation of some of the historic flags that were designed and used as our country fought for independence, and developed into an nation. Allen Dale Craft will lead all in the singing of a patriotic song and in our National Anthem. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the public is invited to share in a birthday cake celebrating the 237th birthday of the United States of America. We hope you will also take a few minutes to stroll past the windows of our businesses in Clifton Forge to admire the décor they have created to honor our nation's flag. Some businesses have even chosen to honor a veteran who has served in the armed forces of our country. We look forward to seeing many individuals and families at the Masonic Amphitheatre on Friday, June 14th at 5 PM, as we gather to honor "OLD GLORY", our nation's official flag. Stars & Stripes Celebration July 4, 2013 Downtown Clifton Forge On July 4th we will begin the day-long celebration with a parade at 11 AM, through the Historic Downtown area of Clifton Forge. The theme of this year’s parade is “Honoring all who served”. The public is cordially invited to come out and enjoy the parade. We encourage you to bring an American Flag to wave proudly as the parade passes by. At the conclusion of the parade everyone is invited to gather at the Town Hall steps to honor our special guests, area veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the World War II Cadet Nurses who proudly served our country. There will be a reading of selections from The Declaration of Independence and a ceremonial raising of our Nation’s flag. Following the reading at the Town Hall steps we encourage you to join us at the Masonic Amphitheatre for a concert by the Highlands Pipes and Drums and a picnic lunch served on the grounds of the Masonic Amphitheatre. There will be an informal art exhibit and sale during the afternoon on the grounds of the Amphitheatre where folks can enjoy a relaxing afternoon browsing local artists’ creations, and strolling through the new park-like setting, adjacent to the Amphitheatre, finished this spring by the Design/Build Lab of the Virginia Tech School of Architecture. At 6 PM, the grounds of the C & O Heritage Center open to the public, free of charge, for an evening of informal fun, food and festivities with our neighbors and friends. The miniature train at the Heritage Center will also be available to ride, for a small fee. The evening entertainment includes a patriotic presentation by the 50 member Lone Star Church chorale. This outstanding presentation will be followed by a formal Retreat of the Colors. More musical entertainment continues after the retreat, featuring other local entertainment. Finally, at that magical hour, as dark settles when we are once again thrilled by the spectacle of a brilliant fireworks display set against the backdrop of our majestic mountains here in the Alleghany Highlands -What a fitting close to our day-long celebration. The Stars and Stripes Committee hopes you will set aside this special holiday to join us in a day-long celebration of our Nation’s 237th birthday. Please call the Main Street Office for more information at 540 862-2000. See you in Clifton Forge July 4th.
